Not only do our classes need to be relevant, but they should also be valued by students and offer them some practical connection to what they already know. As educators, we know the benefits to student learning of these required classes, but we also know that student learning does not happen without their buy-in. These are serious questions that should underlie any course plan. “ What purpose does this class have in my life? How will this help me get a job? Why do we have to take this class?” These questions arise on the first day of many semesters from students in first-year general education classes.
